Biography
Peter Gammons earned widespread regard as a sports journalist and on-air figure with deep ties to Boston and its Red Sox franchise, which he followed for years while on staff at The Boston Globe. Born on April 9, 1945, he entered the field of journalism upon receiving his degree from the University of North Carolina in 1969. In addition to his Globe tenure he contributed regularly to Sports Illustrated and wrote the book Beyond the Sixth Game, an examination of baseball’s free-agency era. Beginning in 1989 he joined ESPN as a studio analyst and continues to appear each evening on Baseball Tonight. Gammons has long championed indie rock in the Boston scene and occasionally takes the stage himself with a Stratocaster in hand, most often at benefit concerts supporting charitable causes. In 2006 Rounder Records issued the album Never Slow Down, Never Grow Old to raise funds for the Boston-area Foundation to Be Named Later.
