Biography
Though Peter Godwin's vocals seemed to materialize abruptly upon the 1982 release of his single "Images of Heaven," his musical endeavors had already spanned more than five years. His initial foray came as part of the ensemble Metro, which issued its debut album, simply titled Metro, in 1976. The group temporarily adopted the moniker Public Zone and put out a single featuring drumming by Stewart Copeland of the Police; Copeland had been invited to join Metro full-time yet opted to stay with his existing band.
Following the issuance of Metro's New Love in 1979 and Future Imperfect the subsequent year, the collective disbanded. Transitioning to a solo path, Godwin put forth the album Images of Heaven in 1982. Its synth-pop title cut gained a devoted following among new wave radio audiences, while a daring video interpretation sparked debate through its depiction of nude women assuming crucifix positions.
Interest in Godwin's former band revived when David Bowie included a rendition of Metro's "Criminal World" on his 1983 album Let's Dance. Nevertheless, Correspondence, also from 1983, marked Godwin's final output for some time, with listeners waiting until 1998 for the career overview Images of Heaven: The Best of Peter Godwin, which incorporated three fresh tracks. In the intervening period, Godwin composed material for fellow artists and took on acting roles in motion pictures.
