Hong Kong-based composer Peter Kam has built a distinguished reputation for his film scores, with his professional path gaining momentum in the closing years of the 1990s. Born in 1961, he received his musical training at San Francisco State University and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. His early work centered on pop songs and advertising music before he shifted focus to film soundtracks in the middle of the 1990s. By 1997 he was scoring multiple films annually, and his contribution to San Tau Dip Ying that year brought his first nomination for a Hong Kong Film Award. In 2000 the music he composed for Xing Yuan from 1999 earned him his initial Hong Kong Film Award. Kam went on to collect numerous further honors, maintaining a steady stream of Hong Kong Film Award nominations throughout the years that followed.
