Biography
Born in Southampton on October 15, 1953, Peter Phillips rose to prominence as a central figure in British choral traditions, chiefly through his long tenure directing the ensemble The Tallis Scholars. Beyond that role, he has distinguished himself as a researcher, broadcaster on both radio and television, advocate for greater public awareness of Renaissance repertoire, founder and operator of a specialist recording imprint, and instructor at several institutions.
He pursued organ studies as a scholar at St. John's College, Oxford, completing the degree in 1975 after absorbing both practical choral and keyboard training and historical scholarship under musicologists Denis Arnold and David Wulstan. Two years earlier, while still an undergraduate, he gathered singers drawn from the choral foundations of Oxford and Cambridge colleges to present Renaissance works, christening the ensemble The Tallis Scholars in tribute to the Tudor composer Thomas Tallis; the designation reflected the participants' actual status as choral scholars. Although he accepted academic positions at Oxford, the Royal College of Music, and Trinity College of Music, the demands of the group increased once it was formally constituted in 1978. International touring soon followed, encompassing repeated visits across Britain, continental Europe, Asia, and more than sixty American engagements by the mid-2010s.
Phillips relinquished his teaching commitments in 1988 yet maintained an active schedule of archival research into early sacred repertory, authorship of monographs, and appearances on British broadcast programs. Together with Steve Smith he established the Gimell label, initially devoted to documenting The Tallis Scholars; the transparent acoustic quality of its productions helped shape prevailing approaches to recording Renaissance choral music. One of the imprint's initial projects was the 1990 release Music from the South Bank Show. His podium work has extended to other ensembles, among them the Collegium Vocale Ghent, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, and Markell's Voices of Novosibirsk.
He has broadened the available Renaissance choral literature by commissioning new pieces from Eric Whitacre, Nico Muhly, and his close associate John Tavener; Tavener's Requiem, written for the choir, was presented to commemorate the centenary of the First World War's outbreak. Phillips has also produced an extensive discography both with The Tallis Scholars and with additional choirs on labels other than Gimell. In 2019 the ensemble issued Josquin's Missa Mater Patris together with Noel Bauldeweyn's Missa da Pacem on Gimell; a further volume of Josquin masses appeared in 2020. The following year Phillips recorded music of Francisco Guerrero for Hyperion with El León de Oro, and in 2023 he returned to Gimell for an album devoted to John Sheppard's Missa Cantate. At that point his total recorded output exceeded twenty-five titles.
