Biography
Distinct from a Tucson indie act sharing the identical moniker, the Phantom Limbs emerged as a death rock outfit rooted in the Bay Area, drawing primary inspiration from early Christian Death’s blend of thrashy metallic punk with eerie keyboard-driven goth rock while layering in their signature cabaret theater flair. The late ’90s saw the ensemble coalesce around lead vocalist Hopeless, keyboardist Stevenson Sedgwick, keyboardist/bassist Sköt B, guitarist Jason “Captain Phantom” Miller, and drummer Mike Klösoff; after leaving Los Angeles, the musicians settled in Oakland and commenced extensive West Coast touring. Jello Biafra, impressed by one of their performances, placed them on his Alternative Tentacles roster, resulting in the November 2000 release of the debut single “Hot Knives and Hornets.” A subsequent split single alongside labelmates the Fleshies paved the way for the August 2001 arrival of the full-length Applied Ignorance.
