Following the conclusion of Love Society in the early 1970s, Phase III took shape. Led by singer/guitarist Keith Abler, the ensemble delivered a janglier, more seasoned style of psychedelic-tinged rock. Their song “Back in the U.S.A.” stood as an apparent rejoinder to “Back in the USSR,” and when joined by “Working in a Coal Mine” and a fresh treatment of George Harrison’s “Taxman,” the selections illustrated an emerging circle of musicians sharpening their abilities. Abler, Hassinger, and bassist Larry Baldock would subsequently join Sunblind Lion.
