Biography
Much like numerous other figures who shaped drum'n'bass during the 1990s, PHD drew upon his foundation in electro and hip-hop to advance the breakbeat-driven style across Britain. His connections extended back to the early-'80s electro/hip-hop environment, while additional inspiration came from '70s jazz and soul-funk fusion alongside the breakbeat innovations of early-'80s DJs such as Grandmaster Flash. Toward the close of the '80s he started exploring the acid house sounds rapidly spreading through Britain, struck by the wide array of paths these fresh textures might follow. When an emerging breakbeat movement took hold in his homeland during the early '90s, PHD immersed himself in it, beginning as a DJ before shifting into production. Over time he aligned with LTJ Bukem's Good Looking roster, resulting in releases on projects including the label's celebrated Earth series. He also channeled his own output, plus that of fellow artists, through his Ascendant Grooves imprint. In parallel he participated in Good Looking's Words 2 B Heard collective, an effort dedicated to expanding live opportunities for musicians, vocalists, and technology.
