Phenomena

Tom Galley, sibling of ex-Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley, assembled this expansive video and recording endeavor whose albums function as thematic explorations of supernatural events. Even an extensive roster of supporting players could not ensure consistent quality, and Phenomena illustrated that limitation. Its original configuration included bassist Neil Murray, drummer Cozy Powell, guitarist Mel Galley and vocalist Glenn Hughes, prompting high anticipation. The material, however, tended toward excessive intricacy without strong melodic focus. Two years afterward, Dream Runner encountered comparable shortcomings yet proved somewhat more satisfying; it again assembled a distinguished group of contributors, among them Ray Gillen, Max Bacon, Scott Gorham, Kyoji Yamamoto and John Wetton. Although the album earned favorable notices from music journalists, commercial performance remained weak, prompting the cancellation of earlier plans to adapt the Phenomena concept into motion pictures.
