Biography
Growing up as the offspring of a pianist and trumpeter, Phil Davis established an independent reputation as a widely sought studio musician and ensemble director. He appears regularly with the Phil Davis Quartet and the eclectic collective known as The Chronicle, while his stage credits also include appearances with Will Downing, Jonathan Butler, George Duke, Rachelle Farrell, Gerald Albright, Boney James and Najee. A resourceful songwriter, he composed the title track for Boney James’ 1999 release Body Language, supplied two numbers for Alex Bugnon’s 2000 album As Promised, and wrote two pieces for the late George Howard’s 1998 project Midnight Mood, which he also produced. On Al Jarreau’s 2000 album Tomorrow Today he served as producer and performed on three tracks.
His formal training began with piano and trumpet lessons from his father; he later took up the French horn while in high school. He continued at Clark-Atlantic University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in music education and performed with the school jazz orchestra at both the Montreaux Jazz Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
