Born in Birmingham, England, in 1979, pianist Philip Edward Fisher began piano studies at age nine and delivered his initial public recital just twelve months afterward. His first instructor was Philip Martin. At twelve he presented the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, Op. 102 at Symphony Hall in his hometown. He completed his secondary training at the Purcell School before entering the Royal Academy of Music in London, where Christopher Elton directed his keyboard work and additional guidance came from Boris Berman, Stephen Kovacevich, and Stephen Hough. A 2001 Julius Isserlis Scholarship awarded by the Royal Philharmonic Society took him to New York’s Juilliard School, where Joseph Kalichstein and Jerome Lowenthal served as his principal teachers. His New York debut occurred at Alice Tully Hall in the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30.

Fisher’s international schedule has encompassed solo and chamber appearances at Wigmore Hall and the Barbican in the United Kingdom as well as Merkin Hall at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in the United States, with further tours across western Europe and performances in Ukraine, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. He maintains an active involvement with contemporary repertoire, having worked directly with Ronald Stevenson, Thomas Adès, and Arvo Pärt. In 2006 the New York Miniaturist Ensemble presented the world premieres of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s First Natural Durations for solo piano under his hands. As a chamber musician he has collaborated with the Brodsky Quartet, violinist Augustin Hadelich, and trombonist Joseph Alessi, and he has appeared at Music@Menlo, the Beethoven Chamber Music Festival, and the Kyoto International Music Festival in Japan.

His recording career began in 2010 with a Naxos release devoted to Handel’s keyboard suites performed on piano. Early Chandos projects included the 2011 album Piano Works by the Mighty Handful, while subsequent Naxos discs comprise a second volume of Handel keyboard music issued in 2015 and the 2023 collection John Corigliano: Complete Solo Piano Music.
