His training occurred under Raymond Moses and Frank Sturchio at St. Mary's University before he continued at the Rackham Graduate School of the University of Michigan, studying with Ross Lee Finney. Composition lessons with Karlheinz Stockhausen followed at UC Davis in California. In the late 1950s and early 1960s he organized new music festivals at the McNay Art Institute together with "Blue" Gene Tyranny. He toured as a member of the ONCE Group and took part in a Carnegie Hall appearance alongside Yoko Ono, George Brecht, and Terry Jennings. Additional tours were undertaken with Jerry Hunt, among them Roger Shattuck's Pataphysics Festival in Austin, TX. For ten years he hosted the radio program Musica Nova on Texas Public Radio. Since 1982 he has owned the Clipper Ship Book Store in San Antonio, TX.
