Listen on Coda
Hailing from Pennsylvania, Phyllis Chapell built a local following through her broad vocal capabilities, command of multiple languages in performance, and acoustic guitar work. From a young age she explored varied styles that encompassed sacred material and Hebrew Israeli songs along with American folk and pop, carrying her music across many countries. Journeys abroad introduced strong Brazilian, Latin American, European, and African influences that she folded into her sets. Alongside keyboard player Dan Kleiman she has led the ensemble SIORA, whose core sound merges world jazz and Brazilian music. Chapell has also appeared with the Ken Ulansey Klezmer & World Ensemble, whose sets span swing, big band, classic rock, and R&B. Her solo release World Songs arrived in 2000.
