During the tranquil eighties, Pianosaurus emerged as an intriguing novelty by performing innocent pop tunes using toy instruments such as miniature pianos, synthetic brass, and various playthings designed for kids. In the initial years of that decade, Alex Garvin, Bianca "Flystrip" Miller, and Steve Dansiger formed the group within New York State, subsequently issuing a pair of live-recorded albums on their own in 1985. Rounder Records put out their official first full-length, Groovy Neighborhood, in 1987; Peter Holsapple from the db's handled production duties, and the record included reinterpretations of material by Chuck Berry along with John Lee Hooker. The year after that saw the trio contributing to Francis Ford Coppola's film New York Stories both on screen and via its accompanying soundtrack, positioning them to unveil Back to School as their follow-up until Garvin departed amid apparent psychological distress, leaving that album forever unreleased.
