Passereau, a composer of French chansons, performed for the Duke of Angoulême in 1509; this nobleman would later ascend as François I. From 1525 to 1530, he likely served as a tenor at Cambrai Cathedral, although records leave this affiliation uncertain. His significance in chanson repertoire stands out because Attaingnant published a single volume featuring pieces by both Janequin and Passereau, an unprecedented approach during that period. François may have commissioned the earliest editions of his compositions. Despite later assessments that deem Passereau’s chansons lightweight, they enjoyed considerable popularity during his lifetime. Accounts indicate that “Il est bel et bon” echoed through Venetian streets. Lively rhythms, everyday themes, and ribald language probably fueled this appeal. Numerous editions appeared for his works, along with transcriptions for various instruments, underscoring their contemporary importance and favor.
