Biography
An accomplished lutenist, Pietro Melli created works specifically for his own instrument. In 1612 he joined the imperial court orchestra based in Vienna. His service extended to Emperor Matthias’s court, and Ferdinand II also retained him beginning in 1619. Salary records confirm that Melli was held in high regard as a musician, his pieces echoing the textural and structural qualities found in Monteverdi’s output.
