Biography
Pillowfight took shape as a collaboration between producer Dan the Automator and singer/songwriter/violinist Emily Wells, whose sound recalls Morcheeba, Danger Doom, Macy Gray, and Beck. The pair first connected at the Calgary Folk Festival, where an unplanned workshop assignment sparked an improvisational exchange that prompted them to pursue further work together. Dan, known for his roles in Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, and Dr. Octagon, and Wells, who maintains her own solo output while having partnered with Buck 65 and Count Bass D, formed a lasting friendship. Wells later visited Dan’s studio in San Francisco, where the duo began shaping Pillowfight’s first album. Issued on Bulk Recordings, the self-titled record appeared in 2013 and included appearances by Kid Koala and Lateef the Truthspeaker.
