Biography
The Sheffield sextet Pink Grease delivered a pungent blend of punk noise and electronic sleaze. Their earliest show took place under the name the Buttf*ckers before the lineup shifted first to Pink Grease and the Evil X and finally settled on the shorter Pink Grease moniker. Horseglue Records, the label launched by Soul Jazz founder Ethan Reid alongside Barry 7 of Add N to (X), issued the band’s debut 7" single “Working All Day.”
Early in 2003 the group surfaced again with the Soul Paco EP, then followed that spring with the All Over You EP. Recorded in New York City, the latter appeared as a joint release between Horseglue and Mute. To showcase their hybrid of 1977-style punk, disco, and analog weirdness that incorporated home-made synths, the musicians toured the U.K. in spring 2003, opening for acts ranging from Ladytron to the Soledad Brothers. Later that year they tracked their first album, This Is for Real, alongside producer Stephen Lironi and also put out the tour document The Nasty Show DVD.
Activity remained high throughout 2004: the single “Fever” and the straight-to-video zombie film Creep Killers both preceded the summer arrival of This Is for Real. A second album, Mechanical Hearts, was finished, yet after only promo copies were manufactured Mute ended its relationship with the band, leaving the record unreleased. Pink Grease disbanded in 2007; vocalist Rory Lewarne subsequently launched White Witches, while guitarist Steven Santa Cruz passed away on January 29, 2021.
