Having already contributed to the power pop trio Brighter throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Alex Sharkey entered the new millennium with considerable prior involvement in the music business. That ensemble issued multiple EPs before shifting toward an electronic-pop format and adopting the name Hal, under which it continued releasing EPs and received critical notice for its Election Day EP. In 2000 Sharkey chose an alternate path that produced Pinkie, a largely solo project centered on Sharkey yet aided by former bandmate Keris Howard. During that same year the project appeared on several compilations, among them Viva Mobstar and Christmas Underground. Pinkie then issued My Little Experiment through Planting Seeds Records in 2001. The outfit has since performed across North America even while Sharkey maintains a concurrent role in Fosca, the English-based pop outfit.
