Pinkston surfaced amid the Texas rock circuit toward the close of the 1990s, its sound defined by weighty, forceful guitar textures overlaid with shimmering pop pulses. The initial core comprised Beth Lewis on vocals alongside guitarists Josh Daugherty and Ean Parsons; repeated personnel shifts in the drum and bass positions persisted until the roster stabilized during spring 1998. Completion of the lineup came through Todd Lewis—frontman of the Toadies, husband of Beth Lewis, and acquaintance of percussion specialist Ben Burt. After several informal rehearsals, Burt committed to the role of permanent drummer. At that juncture Beth Lewis began acquiring bass skills, and the group devoted the balance of 1998 to refining material originally sketched by Daugherty and herself. Several months onward the band delivered its debut performance to an ardent reception. Activity centered on the regional circuit, where the musicians soon shared bills with Baboon and the Toadies. After inking a deal with Last Beat Records in 1999, Pinkston issued its inaugural release that same year—an untitled five-track EP that reached stores in February 2000. Continued stage appearances steadily expanded the group’s local audience. In April 2001 the band entered the studio to lay down its first album-length effort, All That Causes Bruises, which appeared in 2002.
