Biography
Born on 20 May 1948 in Mountain Home, Idaho, USA, Bennett spent his formative years on a ranch steeped in the sounds of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. Starting in the 1960s he merged honky tonk roots with fresher textures, forging a hard rocking country approach even though conventional singing was never his strength. A bid to gain traction in Nashville during 1983 ended without results. Although the 1989 album Pure Quill drew widespread acclaim, the towering, tattoo-covered figure with a handlebar moustache remained an improbable candidate for fame.
