Biography
Born to tenor saxophonist Paul Guloien, who performed under the name Paul Perry, P.J. Perry launched his own path on alto saxophone inside his father’s group at age 14. A single year later he was already working as a freelancer across Vancouver. Although several U.S. opportunities came his way, among them an invitation from Terry Gibbs at 18, Perry has anchored nearly all of his professional life in Canada, interrupted only by brief European stays, while sharing stages with the country’s leading jazz artists and recording extensively in studios. His own impassioned approach fuses traits of Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, and Phil Woods. Across those decades P.J. Perry has documented his work on CBC, Gramaphone, Little Mountain Records, Unity (1989), Jazz Alliance (1990), and Justin Time (2000).
