Biography
San Diego-based duo Planet B merges the punk and hip-hop origins of its two members to produce intense, boundary-shattering sounds. After issuing a pair of 7-inch singles, the group’s 2018 self-titled debut album revealed a sure hand at welding hardcore punk to turntablism and an array of further influences.
Justin Pearson of Dead Cross and hip-hop producer Luke Henshaw, who had already joined forces on earlier ventures, recognized a shared wish to channel their skills into a fresh undertaking. The 2015 single “Wrong Utopia” served as their opening statement, immediately marking them as combative genre evaders. A split 7-inch with turntablist outfit Invisibl Skratch Piklz arrived in 2017, after which the pair turned in earnest to completing their first full-length. Several high-profile guests contributed to the record, among them Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and PiL along with Martin Atkins of Killing Joke. Kool Keith (Dr. Octagon) appeared on the explosive lead track “Crustfund.” Released in 2018, the self-titled debut displayed raw, socially conscious lyricism and fuzzy, industrial beats that cast the duo as heirs to Beastie Boys’ signature punk/hip-hop approach.
