Biography
Pluralone represents the solo outlet for Josh Klinghoffer, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose extensive background as a session musician includes a long tenure handling guitar duties for Red Hot Chili Peppers alongside contributions to numerous prominent figures across indie and alternative rock circles. A rotating group of longtime associates and fellow players assisted in shaping the atmospheric and occasionally boundary-pushing rock textures that defined the project's first full-length effort, To Be One with You, issued in 2019, while later refinements appeared on the follow-up This Is the Show in 2022.
Beyond studio and live work alongside PJ Harvey, Beck, Gnarls Barkley, Warpaint, and additional artists, Klinghoffer served as lead guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 through 2019. Throughout those years he maintained parallel activity with the exploratory outfit Dot Hacker plus an array of one-time performances, guest spots, and recording sessions. Preparation for Pluralone material began in 2018 and extended through intermittent studio visits the next year. The initial public offering arrived in August 2019 via a single comprising two covers of non-English tracks: Mina's "Io Sono Quel Che Sono" and Jorge Ben's "Menina Mulher da Pele Preta." Further development of the debut album enlisted assistance from Flea, former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery, and additional contributors before the November 2019 release of To Be One with You, whose layered and at times experimental compositions drew from sources spanning John Cale to Jeff Buckley.
Klinghoffer formally departed Red Hot Chili Peppers in December 2019, coinciding with the return of his former bandmate and collaborator John Frusciante. The second Pluralone album, I Don't Feel Well, emerged shortly afterward in December 2020. Subsequent years brought new affiliations with Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder's side project Earthlings, along with guest appearances on recordings by Cate Le Bon, Adam Levine, and Elton John. This Is the Show, Pluralone's third album, arrived in 2022 featuring Avery on select tracks together with drummer Eric Gardner and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith.
