Portland's synth-core group Point Line Plane consists of vocalist and keyboardist Josh Blanchard, drummer Nathan Carson, and keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Howard Gillam. Blanchard has also performed with the Sensualists, Mome Raths, and the Kremlin Bronx, while Carson belongs to Witch Mountain and Gillam records under the name Supersprite. Originally a duo, the project blended no-wave noise with vintage analog synth textures that evoked Trans Am along with Numbers and Experimental Dental School, both of which have shared bills with Point Line Plane. Their split EP alongside the Planet The on Mountastic Records, the same imprint that issues Witch Mountain material, preceded the band's debut full-length, the self-titled Point Line Plane, issued in summer 2003. Gillam entered the lineup midway through the tour for that album, after which the trio closed out the year by releasing a 7" via S-S Records and contributing to a Fort Hazel Magic compilation as well as a Screamers tribute issued by Xeroid/Extravertigo. Following Gillam's arrival, the group delivered Smoke Signals on Skin Graft in fall 2004.
