Formed in 2008 by multi-instrumentalists and Stanford students Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn, the California outfit Pomplamoose—an English rendering of the French term for grapefruit—merge Regina Spektor’s and Frida Hyvönen’s eccentric, jazz-inflected, free-ranging approach to songwriting with the expansive indie-pop drive of other male-female duos such as Mates of State, the Bird and the Bee, and Matt & Kim. The pair built a substantial audience via their self-coined “Videosongs” on Myspace and YouTube, which presented unembellished, live performances—without lip-synching—of both original material and selected covers. Pomplamoose have also created music for Toyota and Hyundai television spots, with the latter featuring the duo on camera. They favor digital-only releases, issuing the albums and EPs Pomplamoose, Tribute to Famous People, The Album You Bought at Our Show (Thanks for That), 3 New Songs Woot!, and Christmas in Space.
