Los Angeles-based jangle pop outfit Pop Art came together in 1983 with an initial lineup that featured singer David Steinhart alongside his brothers Steve and Rich handling guitar duties, bassist Tony Ortega, and drummer Steve LePatner. The Steinharts subsequently launched their own imprint, Stonegarden, specifically to issue the group’s first single, “That’s Enough for Me,” which was followed in 1984 by a self-titled six-song EP. One year later the band delivered its full-length debut, A Perfect Mental Picture, an album that cultivated a devoted cult audience on college radio; LePatner departed shortly afterward, and Steven Weisburd took over the drum chair for the 1986 successor, Long Walk to Nowhere. Diehard fans regard the 1987 release Snap Crackle Pop Art as the group’s definitive statement, yet widespread recognition never materialized despite strong critical notices. After issuing one last album, 1990’s Later on in the Same Life, Pop Art disbanded. Stonegarden later compiled Really Blind Faith: A Retrospective 1984-1990 in 2000, while David Steinhart, in the years between, put out the solo albums Everything She Says in 1992 and The Almighty Nest the following year. In 1994 he assembled Small Brown Handbag, recruiting bassist Cindy Albon and drummer John Glogovac.
