Born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland, on May 18, 1920, the future Pope John Paul II pursued theological studies in clandestine conditions throughout the Nazi occupation of his country. He received priestly ordination in 1946 and subsequently joined the clergy of the Krakow diocese. After six years on the faculty of the Krakow Seminary, Pope Pius XII named him auxiliary bishop in 1958. Pope Paul VI elevated him to Archbishop of Krakow five years later. In 1967 he was created a Cardinal of the Roman Church. On October 16, 1978, he was elected pope and took the name John Paul II. He remained in office for the rest of the twentieth century and became the most widely traveled pontiff in history, reaching every region of the globe. Sony Classical issued Abba Pater in 1999, an album that paired musical accompaniment with selections from his inspirational addresses.
