Biography
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Possible Humans craft a raucous yet finely detailed fusion of indie and post-punk reminiscent of earlier acts like the Clean and current peers such as Twerps and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. Their 2018 release Ringwood/Ozone first presented the chiming, intertwined guitars and poetic lyrics that would define them, before the style reached greater polish on the official debut album Everybody Split the following year.
The group came together in 2012 when brothers Steve, Mark, and Adam Hewitt began collaborating with Leon Cranswick, after which Samuel Tapper soon became a member. Although early improvisational sessions involved frequent instrument changes among the musicians, Possible Humans eventually stabilized their lineup with Mark on drums, Sam and Steve sharing vocals, and Adam and Leon covering the remaining parts. While developing their material, the collective drew from Guided by Voices, Neil Young, and Wire to form their darkly jangly approach. Their initial recording appeared as the 7" Toroid/Cuz, issued on Strange Pursuits, the label run by friend Sam Wilkinson. Early in 2018 the band put out Ringwood/Ozone as a tape that emphasized their loose-limbed improvisation abilities. For their first full-length they worked with Alex MacFarlane, who also plays in Twerps and the Stevens. In early 2019 MacFarlane issued Everybody Split on his Hobbies Galore imprint in a pressing of 200 copies that sold out within a day, after which Trouble in Mind handled a reissue that August.
