Biography
In 2009 Tim DeLaughter—mastermind behind both Polyphonic Spree and Tripping Daisy—launched Preteen Zenith, shifting from the sweeping arrangements of his prior endeavors toward a more intimate yet equally hallucinatory style. Having first developed fresh songs in isolation that proved unsuitable for Polyphonic Spree, he enlisted longtime Tripping Daisy colleague Philip E. Karnats to capture the material he had been shaping. Across several collaborative sessions the duo confronted flooding at Karnats’ Chicago home studio, assembled a temporary workspace inside a Memphis cabin, and hurried to finish before Karnats’ first child arrived, thereby reviving their earlier creative rapport. They further drew on Polyphonic Spree’s extensive membership to complete the group, adding Dylan Silvers, Jason Garner, Julie Doyle, and Evan Hisey. Once equipped with a complete performing roster and an arduously completed set of recordings, Preteen Zenith issued its first album, Rubble Guts & BB Eye, in 2012 via DeLaughter’s own imprint, Good Records.
