Biography
Born Gregory Broderick on 24 June 1973 in Jones Town, Jamaica, West Indies, the future singer grew up as one of five children to Delita Burnett and Ralston Broderick. The family later moved to Bay Farm Road, where he enrolled at St. Anne’s Secondary School and first discovered his vocal talent. School concerts and neighborhood gatherings soon featured him regularly, prompting local supporters to urge him toward talent contests in Kingston. His first victory came at the Bleechers nightclub, an appearance that earned him an early nickname when female fans compared him to Prince; he subsequently adopted the name Gregg and built a local reputation. Although Michael Jackson and Little Kirk shaped his initial influences, he chose instead to model his delivery on leading dancehall performers. Encouraged by Sanchez, he refined a personal approach that brought him, in 1998, an introduction from Danny English to Patrick Roberts of the Shocking Vibes crew. The connection launched both artists, resulting in multiple collaborations on contemporary rhythms throughout 1999. With the arrival of the new decade, Gregg’s recording of “The Way” on the Scarface rhythm became his breakout success. Follow-up single “That’s The Way” sustained his visibility, and the release of “Gangster Way” solidified his standing.
