Having survived the upheavals of the 1960s, Prince Lasha distinguished himself as an inventive avant-garde flutist who also turned to alto and clarinet on occasion. During the early 1950s he performed in a Texas group alongside Ornette Coleman. His 1954 relocation to California brought years of near invisibility that lasted until the next decade. Two albums on Contemporary with Sonny Simmons appeared in 1962 and 1967, followed by a British Columbia session in 1966; he also served as sideman for Eric Dolphy and for the Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet, both in 1963. Additional recordings on small labels continued until roughly 1983, after which Lasha withdrew from the jazz world entirely. He died in 2008.
