Biography
Brooklyn's Proper., operating earlier under the name Great Wight, arrived in 2017 via debut album The Suburbs Have Ruined My Life. The collection delivered charged emo-punk tracks that traced frontman Erik Garlington's coming-of-age as a queer black man who relocated from the bible belt to New York City.
Drawing on an expansive list of touchstones that encompassed System of a Down, At the Drive-In, Kendrick Lamar, Tiny Moving Parts, Kanye West, and Modern Baseball, Garlington joined bassist Natasha Johnson and drummer Elijah Watson to become regular presences across the East Coast D.I.Y. punk circuit.
They signed with U.K. indie Big Scary Monsters before issuing their second album, 2019's widely praised I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better, which contained the Willow Hawks and Sonder Bombs-assisted single "Bragging Rights."
Three years afterward the band delivered the expansive Great American Novel, produced by Bartees Strange. The fifteen-track concept LP examined race, sexuality, gender, and systemic oppression while folding post-hardcore, alternative, indie, and progressive rock textures into the trio's continually shifting sound.
