Biography
Joe Magistro, later known as Prophet Omega, played drums in the nineties group Darlahood while also working frequently as a hired musician across New York’s rock community. From his Brooklyn apartment he began combining samples, loops, and his own vocals, and once he felt ready he shared the results with a few acquaintances. A DJ among them started featuring the material at a club where he worked, which brought it to the notice of a production staffer for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy; that staffer placed the track “An Area Big Enough to Do It In” on the show’s 2004 soundtrack. The placement secured a deal with Capitol Records, which put out Prophet Omega’s debut album The Natural World on its Astralwerks label in 2006. Cut partly in Brooklyn and partly in a Catskills cabin, the record found Magistro handling nearly every instrument, acoustic and electronic alike, as well as all the vocals.
