Pullman emerged as yet another intersection among several American indie rock stalwarts active throughout the 1990s. Bundy K. Brown of Tortoise, Directions in Music, and Loftus joined forces with Doug McCombs of Eleventh Dream Day, Tortoise, and Brokeback, Chris Brokaw of Come and the New Year, and Curtis Harvey of Rex and Loftus. These musicians had already crossed paths through assorted performances and tours in various combinations across that decade, leading them to capture Turnstyles and Junkpiles in 1998 and then Viewfinder in 2001. Both albums appeared on Thrill Jockey and took shape under the influence of the quartet’s admired acoustic guitarists, among them Nick Drake, Leo Kottke, John Fahey, Ry Cooder, and Richard Thompson.
