Drawing upon influences spanning soul, alternative pop/rock, and blues, Purusa forges cohesive fusion compositions that foreground the group’s melodic strengths. Vocalist Kris Kirkman and guitarist Zach Hinkelman established Purusa in Portland, OR, during late 1999. The duo selected the name after encountering Hindu sacred texts in which “purusa” denotes both soul and man. An immediate creative rapport formed upon their first meeting, prompting the swift composition of numerous songs. Bassist Greg Jackson, keyboardist Josh Nichols, and drummer Andrew Marshall—previously a member of Six Foot Sam—later completed the lineup. Following several months of steady rehearsals, the ensemble captured its debut release, the EP 101. Media praise for the recording secured extensive airplay on Portland radio outlets and steadily broadened the band’s audience.
