PWNT emerged from the vision of Los Angeles singer/songwriter Kosta Galanopoulos, whose style fuses soft vocals with playful Baroque details to produce quirky, rhythm-driven psych-pop. The project's first album, Days in the Summer, surfaced in 2021. On the 2023 follow-up Play What's Not There, he leaned into a sound that borders on disco while retaining a more classic acoustic equilibrium.

A Cocoa Beach, Florida native, Galanopoulos borrowed his PWNT alias directly from the Miles Davis remark "play what's not there." Before stepping out alone, he handled drums for Hether and supported artists such as Adam Lambert and Magic Giant. After signing to Nashville-based Acrophase Records, he issued the first PWNT single "Goodbye" in 2020. Cut in multiple spots across Florida, Los Angeles, and his former New York City home, the complete Days in the Summer arrived in mid-2021.

Following the release of the atmospheric track "Don't Look in the Mirror" alongside okaywill, PWNT delivered Play What's Not There in July 2023 with renewed attention to songcraft while preserving its '60s- and '70s-inspired character. Galanopoulos tracked the album at his Long Beach home studio alongside contributors such as David Davis (Frank Ocean, the War on Drugs).
