Quatermass came together in 1969 as a progressive rock trio that featured bassist and vocalist John Gustafson, keyboardist Pete Robinson, and drummer Mick Underwood, the last of whom had already left Episode Six. Underwood’s résumé also included a period alongside Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple and Rainbow in the Outlaws, plus earlier work with Shadows bassist Jet Harris and an early line-up of the Herd, while Gustafson had previously played in the Merseybeats and the Big Three.

The group delivered its sole album on Harvest in 1970; although the label viewed the record as a strong release, it failed to achieve notable sales and the band dissolved by the end of 1971. Underwood later joined another Harvest act, Strapps, which survived for a longer period, and both he and Gustafson went on to perform separately with Ian Gillan. Gustafson additionally appeared on Roxy Music’s third, fourth, and fifth albums, while Robinson continued working as a session musician.
