Emerging from Los Angeles, Quatrain released a little-known album in 1969 that fused Southern Californian folk-rock of the period with psychedelic and hard rock elements. David Briggs produced and engineered the sessions; he remains best known for his production work with Neil Young. The group had evolved from the Human Jungle, which put out a pair of obscure singles on the Double Shot label while frequently performing under the name the Berries. Briggs first encountered the musicians during their residency at the Topanga Corral, just north of Los Angeles, and arranged a deal with Tetragrammaton Records, where he held a staff producer position. Partly owing to Tetragrammaton’s own troubles, the self-titled album drew scant attention after its 1969 release, and the band had split by year’s end. Lead guitarist Don Senneville later appeared on two early-1970s albums by Simon Stokes.
