Biography
France's Quatuor Van Kuijk captured significant awards and entered elite artist-development initiatives throughout its opening ten years. Several recordings for the Alpha label have showcased the ensemble's emphasis on string quartets from the Classical and early Romantic eras.
The ensemble originated in Paris during 2012. Both its original designation and the form Van Kuijk Quartet appear in English-speaking settings; regardless, all four musicians are French rather than Dutch, and the initial letter of “Van” is capitalized. First violinist Nicolas Van Kuijk lends the group its name, with Sylvain Favre-Bulle on second violin, Emmanuel François on viola, and Anthony Kondo on cello completing the roster. Early instruction came from the Ysaÿe Quartet, after which the players worked with Günter Pichler at Madrid’s Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia and undertook a student residency at Paris’s ProQuartet chamber-music center under members of the Alban Berg, Artemis, and Hagen Quartets. At the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition the ensemble secured first prize together with the Best Beethoven and Best Haydn awards, adding several further international distinctions that year. Its first Alpha release, the 2016 album Mozart, followed the signing.
Appearances have taken the quartet to leading European and American chamber-music halls, among them London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, and principal Parisian auditoriums. Professional advancement continued through selection as BBC New Generation Artists for 2015–2017 and as ECHO Rising Stars for the 2017–2018 season. With one exception in 2021, an album has appeared on Alpha each year; after the 2017 disc of works by Debussy, Ravel, and Chausson the focus shifted to the span from Mozart to Mendelssohn, culminating in a complete survey of the latter composer’s quartets spread across two albums issued in 2022 and 2023.
