Initiated in 1962 under the leadership of bassoonist Airton Barbosa to accompany the Caravana Cultural de Pascoal Carlos Magno, the Quinteto Villa-Lobos—a wood and brass ensemble committed to linking Brazilian popular and classical traditions—began its work. Through 1964 the ensemble performed across multiple regions of Brazil as well as throughout Latin America. Its debut LP, titled Quinteto Villa-Lobos, appeared in 1966; that same year the musicians joined Edu Lobo, Nara Leão, and Tamba Trio for the live presentation 5 na Bossa at Rio’s Zum Zum club, which was captured on disc. In 1972 the quintet collaborated with Luizinho Eça on the album Vanguarda. Five years afterward it issued Quinteto Villa-Lobos Interpreta, an homage to choro masters that included Ernesto Nazareth, Zequinha de Abreu, Paulinho da Viola, Pixinguinha, K-Ximbinho, and Patápio Silva. The group supplied the soundtrack for the 1979 film O Grande Palhaço. Marking thirty-five years of activity, the musicians released the 1997 recording Quinteto em Forma de Choros as a CD in 2000. In 2001, joined by Marco Pereira, Gilson Peranzzetta, Joyce, Guinga, and Água de Moringa, the ensemble produced Quinteto Villa-Lobos Convida, featuring fresh compositions from Joyce, Guinga, Peranzzetta, and Marco Pereira alongside established pieces by Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, and Ernesto Nazareth.
