Musically skilled, constantly creative, and strongly self-reliant, the durable and ever-evolving hard rock group Ra came together in the late 1990s, anchored by vocalist Sahaj Ticotin together with drummer Skoota Warner, bassist Kirk Lyons, and guitarist Ben Muaro. The quartet delivered an intense fusion of hard rock, funk, nu-metal, and progressive rock colored by Middle Eastern influences. Their debut single, “Crazy Little Voices,” achieved modest chart success when it accompanied the closing credits of the 1999 horror film The Rage: Carrie 2. The 2000 EP One earned the band a contract with Universal, which led to the 2002 album From One; this critically praised and aggressive release contained the singles “Do You Call My Name” and “Rectifier.” Duality, issued in 2005, moved the band toward a cleaner and more melodic style, an approach they sustained across later albums including Black Sun (2008), Black Sheep (2009), and Critical Mass (2013), each released through Sahaja Music Records, the imprint founded by Ticotin.
