In 1998 guitarist Rodrigo Guillen joined keyboardist Ricardo Olivas and drummer Manuel Corona to launch the Latin rock outfit Rabí, first performing under the moniker Avenida. The arrival of bassist Ramon Guillen shortly afterward prompted the group to adopt its current name. Ernesto Vitela stepped in as lead singer before the year ended. During a set at the Jaimes & Jimmys club, Vitela exited and David Guillen took over vocals. December 1999 brought Rabí an opening slot for Aleks Syntek, followed by a joint appearance with Amanecer at the benefit concert La Luz De La Navidad Enciende La Esperanza.
