Raffaela Paton, who performs under the name Raffaela, rose to prominence as one of the Netherlands’ leading pop vocalists after claiming victory in the 2006 installment of the local adaptation of Pop Idol. Hailing from a Surinamese household steeped in music, where her aunt Ruth Jacott had earlier represented the Netherlands at the 1993 Eurovision contest, she first entered the Idols competition by performing India.Arie’s “Beautiful Surprise.” She ultimately secured the title by delivering Agnes Carlsson’s “Right Here, Right Now (My Heart Belongs to You),” outpacing runner-up Floortje Smit with 58 percent of the final vote. Within a single week of its release, the track surpassed 70,000 units sold across the Netherlands and earned platinum certification. Her self-titled debut album, which quickly ascended the charts, appeared in stores shortly thereafter.
