Biography
Qawwali emerged centuries ago as the devotional expression of Sufism across India and Pakistan, drawing on poetic and musical traditions stretching back more than seven hundred years. These songs praise Allah while celebrating core Islamic principles, and their performance is designed to induce a state of deepened spiritual awareness through the structured practice of Sama. When the elevated verses meet an energetic instrumental foundation and listeners join in the ritual, both musicians and listeners are transported into states of ecstatic mystical devotion.
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani-born singer long acknowledged as qawwali’s most widely celebrated figure, died in 1997. Just six weeks later his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan stepped into leadership of the ensemble. Following the customary sign of reverence for his mentor, Rahat adopted his uncle’s first name and was formally installed as director of the group Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had led.
Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan entered the world in Faisalabad, Pakistan, where his uncle immediately singled him out for instruction in qawwali. Displaying unusual ability early on, the boy was already performing alongside his uncle and his father, the noted qawwali vocalist Farroukh Fateh Ali Khan, by the age of three. Structured lessons under his uncle began when Rahat turned six, and at fifteen he became an official member of the renowned troupe.
After taking the helm, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan contributed to numerous recordings and joined Eddie Vedder for a performance at the Dead Man Walking Concert organized by Tim Robbins. The ensemble continues to captivate listeners worldwide through concerts across many countries. Rahat’s first American release, issued on the American Recordings label and recorded in Santa Monica, California, contains four intensely felt and precisely executed tracks. Working with producer Rick Rubin—known for his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys—the album emphasizes deeper bass frequencies and features the tabla prominently in the mix.
Although Rahat welcomes opportunities to collaborate with Western pop artists and to work in advanced studios, his central commitment remains the transmission of qawwali’s spiritual message. In his words, “qawwali music is not only music, it is a message. It was created by Sufis, and when we compose and practice this music, it stays forever. Other music comes and goes, but qawwali never goes. Once you start listening, it goes in your soul, goes in your spirit, and you become more human. I feel that this music is my duty, to go and give the message of Sufism. My future is that one day I will fulfill the desire of Nusrat to give this message to the world.”
