Biography
Acting in the roles of pianist, composer, and band director, he built a strong reputation for leading ensembles and crafting arrangements, even though his releases from the 1950s onward maintained only minimal ties to jazz. His chart work for Sammy Kaye, Hal McIntyre, Charlie Barnet, and Alvino Rey came before he launched tours with his own group in 1950.
