Biography
Even those who cannot recall the group's name may still recognize Randy & the Rainbows' 1963 single "Denise" upon hearing its opening notes, provided they possess even passing acquaintance with doo wop. The Top Ten hit ranks among the upbeat selections that routinely appear on anthologies devoted to the decade's most memorable recordings.
The quintet came together in New York City's Queens borough during 1962. Its roster featured sibling pairs Sal Zero with Mike Zero and Frank Safuto alongside Dominick "Randy" Safuto, completed by Ken Arcipowski. The ensemble had earlier roots in the Dialtones, a 1959 act that included the Safuto brothers, Rosalie Calindo, and their cousin Eddie Scalla. After issuing sides on Goldisc in the early sixties, the Safutos joined Arcipowski and the Zero brothers to establish Randy & the Rainbows. Working under the same production team responsible for the Tokens, they issued "Denise" the following year.
No subsequent release under the Randy & the Rainbows banner matched that initial chart performance. The members periodically adopted alternate names, appearing at various points as Madison Street, Triangle, and Them and Us. Across the years they have appeared on bills alongside the Spinners, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Tony Orlando, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Freddie Roman, Jay Black, and Pat Cooper, and they have also toured with the Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick, and the Four Seasons.
A fresh album arrived from the group in 2001. At that time its lineup comprised original member Mike Zero together with Vinny Carella and Jimmy Bense. Dominic "Randy" Safuto passed away in October 2018.
