Originating in Richmond, Virginia, Rattlemouth expands the scope of art punk by grounding unconventional scales and modes on guitar and saxophone through agile bass lines and steady percussion. Their sound blends propulsion and drive with infusions of Middle Eastern and European folk traditions, melodic lyricism, and sharp punk edges.

The lineup features Danny Finney on saxophone and vocals, Tom Brickman on bass, and Robbie Kinter on drums. Formed in 1990 as a duo of Finney and Kinter, the project soon welcomed Brickman aboard. Rebbie Sharp contributed guitar between 1994 and 1996. Finney and Sharp had earlier established Richmond's Orthotonics during the late 1970s, while Finney and Kinter maintain longstanding roles in the Ululating Mummies, a world music ensemble also based in Richmond.

The group issued Walking a Full Moon Dog in 1996 and Fist Full of Iffy in 1998, both appearing on the Cuneiform label.
