Long before Bruce Springsteen brought fame to Asbury Park, Ray Dahrouge led his doo-wop ensemble, the Darchaes, to dominance across that New Jersey coastal city. Dahrouge delivered lead vocals supported by falsetto Tony Juliano, first tenor Louie Scalpati, second tenor Sal Capalungo, baritone Denny Testa and bass Sam Siciliano, sending crowds into motion at the shoreline clubs.

Before departing for a solo career in 1963, Dahrouge and the Darchaes released two singles—“There Will Always Be You” and “Little Girl Of Mine” b/w “Carol.” National recognition never arrived, yet he notched a succession of regional hits such as “Steppin’ Out,” “Rendezvous With Destiny,” “Lifetime Guarantee Of Love,” “Stepping Out” and “I Can See Him Makin’ Love To You.”

In 1973 Dahrouge assembled the disco band Street People in another bid for commercial success. Their first single, “I Wanna Get Over,” issued in 1974, generated early interest, but the next three—“Never Get Enough Of Your Love,” “You’re My One Weakness Girl” and “I Wanna Spend My Whole Life With You”—could not sustain momentum. A fifth release, “I Wanna Slow Dance With You,” scored regional airplay, yet the forgettable follow-up “Liberated Lady” b/w “Return From An Old Time Movie” triggered the group’s breakup in 1977.
