Biography
Lema's musical journey began with five years performing on the church organ. Upon reaching college age, he had already taken up keyboard duties in Kinshasa venues, accompanying performers such as Kalle, Abeti, M'pongo Love, and Tabu Ley. His association with the Ballet du Zaire led to a nationwide tour from 1974 through 1978, during which he immersed himself in folklore studies. In 1979, a Rockefeller grant enabled him to pursue studies in the United States. This foundation in folklore, choreography, and music facilitated his emergence during the 1980s, sustaining his standing as a soukous artist who resists stylistic confinement. He has lately inked a deal with the global imprint Mango.
