Since 1982 the Ray Mason Band has sustained its quirky pop/rock identity, fronted by guitarist Mason whose retro Silvertone instrument serves as a personal trademark. The lineup also features second guitarist Tom Shea, bassist Stephen Desaulniers, and drummer Frank Marsh. Beginning in the mid-1990s the group maintained a steady release schedule that included Between Blue and Okay in 1995, Missyouville in 1996, Old Souls Day in 1998, Castanets in 1999, and When the Clown's Work Is Over in 2000. Mason additionally supplied songwriting to the 1997 self-titled album by Lonesome Brothers. Recording for the next project commenced in December 2001 and led to the summer 2002 appearance of Three Dollar Man.
